Membership and Club Rules

Membership of The Tigers Karate Clubs is free to all members; however all members must hold an up to date and valid licence with NAKMAS, at the cost prevailing at the time of membership.  This licence includes the student's personal insurance.  A licence must be paid for and applied for within 4 weeks of joining the club or membership will be deemed to be forfeit and membership maybe withdrawn.

All members will be offered 1 free lesson prior to joining the club and then will be expected to pay the prevailing cost to train and no credit will be offered.  If members pay their training fees up front and fail to train on the days paid for, those fees will not be refunded.  Training fees may be reviewed to cover all the club costs and increases in those costs.  Members will be informed in advance of those increases.

An account of the number of lessons attended will be kept in the form of an Attendance Book.  It is the responsibility of the student to present this at the beginning of each lesson and to ensure that the book is made available prior to grading, so that attendance can be verified.  Students must train regularly and failure to train for 1 month may result in club membership being withdrawn.  A minimum of 24 attendances are required to grade to the next kyu grade.  Dan grade will be assessed to the national standard.

Personal Hygiene
Every student is expected to wear a white karate gi and this should be clean at all times.  Female students should wear a plain white tee shirt under the karate jacket.  Male students need not.
All students should remove any form of jewellery prior to training or tape over any jewellery that cannot be removed.  This is a Health and Safety requirement.
Finger and toe nails should be kept clean and kept cut short, this is a Health and Safety requirement.
Training will take place in bare feet, this helps balance and builds the muscles in the feet; however students with varrucas or athletes foots should wear the appropriate martial arts footwear.  Both conditions are contagious and students must act in a responsible manner to ensure that others do not become infected.

Personal Safety
Every effort is taken on behalf of club instructors to ensure that training is offered with regard to best practice, including having attended the correct training courses; however, students must also act with consideration to fellow students.  No uncontrolled violent behaviour will be tolerated.
In pair work students are expected to wear protective head gear and mitts, this is a Health and Safety issue.  Students provide this equipment at their own expense and the club is able to supply items at a competitive price.  Impact bags, focus mitts, etc. are provided at the expense of the club.

Gradings
A grading assessment will normally held every 3 months and all students will be invited to apply for that grading; however at least 24 attendances are required between each grading, and this must be verified by the students Attendance Book.  The student needs to present an up to date and valid licence prior to any grading.  The gradings will be made by Dan grades of the appropriate level and the decision of the Grading Panel is final.

Personal Development
Training should always be challenging, through endeavour we grow, but it should also be enjoyable.  It is the aim of the club to help you strive for perfection; so train hard, practice frequently and most of all…enjoy your training. Remember 100% effort; 100% of the time.

Disciplinary Procedure
Each member is responsible for their behaviour and should that behaviour become unacceptable the following will apply:
Step 1.  The student will be interviewed by the senior instructor and the welfare officer together with the student's parent/guardian; a warning maybe given and noted in the club diary.
Step 2. If the student persists and a second verbal warning is given, this will be followed by a written warning.
Step 3. Should the same student be given a third warning and a second written warning that student will be subject to a ban which will be in keeping with the offence.
The Parents Code of Conduct
We encourage all parents to teach their child that honest effort is as important as success.  Turn disappointment into success by helping your child to work towards skill improvement and to show sportsmanship / respect to all.

We encourage parents to:

4. become familiar with the way of karate-do; including never entering the dojo (training area) without the permission of the sensei/instructor;

6. discuss their child’s status within the club at a time mutually agreed upon with the Welfare Officer, never prior to, during, or directly after training;
7. follow the sensei’s instructions on appropriate behaviour;
8. reward and reinforce good sportsmanship; and
9. display dignity, patience, and positive spirit at all times.

Further, we encourage parents to:
1. never engage in dissent directed toward a sensei or instructor, or a club official;
2. never engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, sensei,
instructor, student, or parent prior to, during, or after a lesson or grading;
